Ann Thompson Hackett, wife, mother and community volunteer, passed away in Peterborough, NH, on March 28, 2015. Born June 21, 1933, Marion, IN to John and Louise (Wagner) Thompson, Ann attended Indiana University, from 1951-54, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority (Delta Chapter). In 1954, she married John T. Hackett, Ph.D, who died in 2010. She completed her B.A. in 1977 in Comparative Literature. Ann and her late husband lived in Columbus, IN for 30 years, where John was Chief Financial Officer for Cummins Engine Company. They were also long time summer residents at The Homestead, Glen Arbor, MI. In 2004, the couple moved to Keene, NH to be closer to their youngest daughter and her family. While her primary role was a supportive one to her husband and children, Ann was active in many civic and community organizations. She was a Life Member of the Girl Scouts of the USA, holding numerous positions with the Tulip Trace Girl Scout Council, including council president, 1978-1981. In 1981, she received the "Thanks" Badge, the highest volunteer recognition from the national organization. Ann was a member of one of the first groups of volunteer architectural tour guides in Columbus, IN. She served in that role for 10 years. She also prepared an architectural tour in Spanish. She was a member of the Earlham College board of directors, Richmond, IN, from 1974-1984 and also on the boards of the Indiana Chapter of the Nature Conservancy; Friends of Music, Indiana University and the Canal Society of Indiana. Ann was a volunteer for the Columbus Ecumenical Assembly and First Call for Help for many years and for Volunteers in Medicine of Columbus. She was a candidate for the School Board of Bartholomew County Consolidated School Corp. in 1972; member of the Independent Nominating Assembly of Bartholomew County, IN; Columbus League of Women Voters, Education Committee and Columbus, Citizens Forum, Moderator, Education Interest Group. Ann was also a member of the Driftwood Valley Arts, Council (later Columbus Area Arts Council); Indianapolis Museum of Art, Columbus Associates Chapter and Women's Committee of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Unit. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Club of Columbus, IN; Tri Kappa Sorority, Tau Chapter, Columbus, IN; Columbus Culture Club and the League of Women Voters. Ann was also active in historical/genealogical research and belonged to societies in IN, KY, LA, MN, NY, OH and PA. Ann is preceded in death by her husband John Hackett, her parents and two younger brothers; Sam Thompson and George Thompson. She is survived by four children, Jane McManus (Gregg), Evansville, IN; David Hackett (Vickie), Trinity, FL; Sarah Sandback (Peter), Hancock, NH and Peter Hackett (Marcy), Albuquerque, NM, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition, she is survived by her sister-in-law, Evelyn Kiick, Vancouver, WA and sister-in-law Jane Thompson, Ft. Wayne, IN. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to either the Indiana or New Hampshire chapters of the Nature Conservancy. A memorial service will be held at the Dublin Community Church, 1125 Main Street, Dublin, NH on Thursday April 2, 2015 at 11:00am. A reception at The Village at Rivermead will immediately follow. A later memorial service will be held in Columbus, IN with interment in Roanoke, IN to follow.
