Arthur Stuart Eldredge IV, of Peterborough, NH, aged 71, passed away on January 30, 2024, as a result of a very rare type of stroke. He was born on August 27, 1952, in Massachusetts, and he moved to New Hampshire at age 4. Living briefly in Hancock, the family moved to Cold Comfort Farm on Windy Row in Peterborough in 1959. Arthur graduated from The Mountain School in Vershire, Vermont and the University of New Hampshire, where he majored in Music Theory and Composition.
Known to his family as Tig, Arthur was a brilliant, cheerful, and enthusiastic man. He was mechanically gifted, had an incredible memory, and enjoyed working on everything from cars to pipe organs. He had a passion for music and worked for many years as a piano tuner in the Monadnock region. He sang in the choir at All Saints’ Episcopal Church for over 30 years, and his church community was a central part of his life, sharing it with his dearest friend from college, Steve Smillie.
Arthur developed his love for antique cars working alongside his father, and later worked as a professional restorer at Pur Sang Auto in Peterborough as well as in Cambridge, MA. Many people remember seeing Arthur driving his 1901 Lane Steamer Runabout, with a huge smile on his face and proudly offering rides to anyone who was interested. The steam car community was one of Arthur’s greatest passions, where he enjoyed participating in meets and tours, and served as Treasurer for the Northeast chapter of the Steam Automobile Club of America. He had many lifelong friendships with fellow enthusiasts.
Arthur was a loving father to his daughter Meg, and for the last two years, he cherished his new role as Grandpa Tig to Nico.
After two decades in the electronics field, Arthur found his work home at Kimball Physics, in Wilton, NH. Since 2011, he contributed to many projects for the world's scientific community, but more importantly was excited to go to work every day. He loved what he did and the people he worked with.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, R.M. Rice Eldredge and Arthur Stuart Eldredge III, and his brothers, Thomas Motley Eldredge and Edward (Ned) Rice Eldredge. He is survived by his daughter Meg Eldredge, his son-in-law AndreÌs IpuÌs, his grandson NicolaÌs Felipe IpuÌs-Eldredge, his sisters, Joanna Eldredge Morrissey, and Sarah (Ra) Eldredge, his nieces, Brianna Lyn Morrissey, Lauren Jean Morrissey, Hannah Eldredge Trautwein and nephew John Luke Trautwein, and his former wife, Deb Rogers.
Arthur’s happy smile and positive attitude will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A service for Arthur will be held at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 51 Concord Street, Peterborough, NH on Saturday, February 10th at 11 o’clock. A reception will follow across the street at Reynold's Hall.
