Bernard Chester Gale, 103 of Hancock, passed away peacefully at Monadnock Community Hospital on February 9, 2023, following a brief illness. He was born in Proctor, VT on December 14, 1919, the son of Bernard Ira Gale and Lillian (Anderson) Gale.
Bernard was raised in Salisbury, VT and then spent the next 50 years living in Rhode Island. He joined the United States Army and spent the next 6 years serving his country in WWII, where he received a Silver Star, three Bronze Stars and four Purple Heart Medals for his actions during the Battle of the Bulge. Bernard’s military service would follow in his family footsteps with his father serving in WWI, his grandfather in the Spanish American War, and his great-grandfather in the Civil War.
In addition to his wife, Mabel Gale of Hancock, Bernard is survived by his step-children Diane and Kenneth Hitchcock of Keene, Bonnie and Griffith Royea of Westmoreland, and Kevin Conway of Milford, CT.
He was predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Marian Goodwin Gale, in 2013; his son Charles Owen Gale, at the age of 3, in 1962; and his siblings Arnold, Madeline, Marshall, Morris and Richard.
Burial, with military honors, will take place in the spring at Greenvale Cemetery, Forest Road, Greenfield, NH.
