Bernard Wayne Schneckenburger

Bernard “Bernie” Wayne Schneckenburger, 88, of Hancock passed away peacefully on February 22, 2022, after a period of failing health.  He was born on September 9, 1933, in Peoria, IL, to Jacob and Nellie (Snider) Schneckenburger.  After graduation from high school, Bernie joined the Navy to serve in the Korean War on the battleship USS Wisconsin (BB-64) and USS Roanoke (CL-145) and rose to the rank of First Class Petty Officer. After completing his service, Bernie attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering receiving a BS in Electrical Engineering.  After graduating college, he was employed by Boeing and then Sperry Gyroscope before joining Norden Systems’ Advanced RADAR Systems and Development in 1962 and retiring in 1989.  During his tenure with Norden, Bernie aided various defense contractors with the development and implementation of various RADAR systems for military organizations. Bernie was instrumental in the implementation of Joint STARS for the US Air Force.

After retiring, Bernie and his wife, Mary, moved to Hancock where they were able to enjoy beautiful New England together for over 30 years.  He served on the Hancock Planning Board and the Southwest Region Planning Commission.  Bernie started riding a motorcycle again at age 70 and rode until 85.  When the weather and roads would allow, he would go for a ride to enjoy the scenic countryside of NH and Mary was a frequent passenger. Bernie was an avid hunter and fisherman enjoying wilderness camping and fishing in ME and questing for the elusive whitetail in northern NH.  Bernie was given a Life Membership to the Peterborough Sportsman’s Club for his time on the Board, being instrumental in getting the first website up and running, and maintaining the trap and skeet machines.  He enjoyed target and clay target shooting and helping with needed repairs at the club.  Bernie was a volunteer with the NH Special Olympic Winter Games working alongside Mary.  Bernie will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Bernie is survived by his wife of over 45 years, Mary Schneckenburger, children Jane Tilly, Roger (Cindy) Schneckenburger, Julie (David Loveless) Schneckenburger, and Ainslie Zwieg; a niece, multiple grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

As requested, there will be no memorial service and Bernie will be interred in the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, New Hampshire.
