Chester “Chet” C. Soule Jr., 94, of Peterborough died peacefully on September 8, 2017 at Summerhill Assisted Living. Chet was born in Portland, ME on March 7, 1923 the son of Chester C. Soule Sr. and Mable (Butler) Soule.
Chet was raised and attended schools in Portland, ME. He met his wife, Alice, and they started their family while living in Portland. After retiring, they moved to Greenfield where they lived for many years before moving to Peterborough in 1987.
Chet began a life of service when he became an Eagle Scout as a young man. He went on to proudly serve as 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army during World War II. He was an instrumental part of the creation and deployment of the Red Ball Express. After the war, Chet began a long career working in the food industry. He was a pioneer of branding in the industry, introducing the need for the #10 can for the general public and creating supermarket brands.
After his retirement, Chet was a longtime volunteer at Monadnock Community Hospital. He was an avid skier, having skied Colorado until the age of 85. He was an expert stamp collector who wrote a book on a single stamp. He loved jazz and classical music, gardening and being outside.
Chet will be remembered for being a loving and dedicated husband and father.
Chet is survived by his daughter Dayl Soule of Costa Mesa, CA and his son Timothy Soule of Haverhill and will be deeply missed by his granddaughter Bethany Patten of Boston.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 from 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM at Jellison Funeral Home, 25 Concord Street, Peterborough. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Divine Mercy Parish, 12 Church Street, Peterborough. Father Michael S. Taylor will officiate. Burial will follow immediately after the service at St. Peter’s Cemetery, High Street, Peterborough.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Chet’s name to: Monadnock Community Hospital, 452 Old Street Road, Peterborough, NH 03458.
