Dorinda Zachos, 59 formerly of Bennington, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on October 21, 2018 at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester. Dee Dee was in a tragic car accident on July 10, 1983 that caused a severe brain injury, she has remained in a coma ever since. Following her accident, she was a patient at The Greenery in Brighton, MA, a facility specializing in head trauma, for five years before being transferred to Hillsborough County Nursing Home where she has resided for the past thirty years.
Dee Dee was born on April 12, 1959 in Peterborough, NH to Linnea (Farhm) and Samuel Zachos of Bennington. She attended Pierce School in Bennington, Antrim Middle School and graduated from Conval High School in 1977. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert McLaughlin and lived in Peterborough, Antrim and West Deering, NH.
As a teenager, she worked as a salad girl at Alberto’s Restaurant in Bennington and as a kitchen helper at Monadnock Community Hospital. After graduating, she worked at New England Business Center. Dee Dee enjoyed camping, attending rock concerts, dancing, and spending time with her family, especially at their cottage on Gregg Lake in Antrim.
Besides her parents, Dee Dee is survived by one brother, Stephen Zachos of Hillsboro; two sisters, Sandy Rebstad of Bennington and Cathy Burke and her husband Tony of Saco, Maine. She is also survived by three aunts and several cousins; three nephews, five nieces and several grand nieces and nephews. Although Dee Dee’s light was dimmed thirty five years ago, she will always be remembered as a funny, sweet, caring young woman with a smile that could light up a room.
Calling Hours will be held on Thursday, October 25th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Jellison Funeral Home, 25 Concord Street, Peterborough; A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, October 26th at The Bennington Congregational Church, Bennington, NH. Burial will follow in the family plot at Evergreen Cemetery.
