Fred Ierlan

September 30, 1938 — October 28, 2022

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Fred Ierlan of Greenfield, NH share the news of his passing on October 28, 2022 at the age of 84.  After enduring a brief illness, he passed peacefully surrounded by his beloved family.

Born September 30, 1938 to Fred Ierlan and Marjorie Lockwood Ierlan, Fred along with his sister Sally were raised in Willoughby, Ohio.   After graduating from Willoughby Union High School, he joined the United States Navy and spent 4 years aboard the USS Rooks, as a Naval Machinist Mate, Second Class stationed in Newport, Rhode Island. His travels and Naval adventures were a highlight of his life.

After a successful blind date, he met and then married his wife of 61 years, Judith Chisholm Ierlan and lived in Westford, Massachusetts.  Fred at the time, worked as a machinist for George W. Moore in Waltham, Ma. and soon he became a father to three children. They moved to Greenfield, NH in 1973 where they made their forever home of 50 years.

Fred worked for Precision Components as a machinist until he started his own business, Granite State Swiss, for over 30 years until his retirement at age 75.

Throughout Fred’s life, his love for riding motorcycles was his escape from the daily routines of life. This quote; “He wore a black leather jacket and motorcycle boots.” Under his senior picture, captured Fred’s passion for motorcycles. Beginning at age 14 he began this love and in his 30’s, Fred found himself competing in “Enduro Racing” in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. He often would travel hundreds of miles to watch varied motorcycle races and competitions. He rode motorcycles for over 60 years until the age of 80 when he “retired” his bike.

Fred is known for his “Quick witted” sense of humor, kind words of appreciation, his tenor voice and for his dedication to his Community and Church. Fred was a simple and “to the point” man, just like his name. He loved his home and his Country. He was so very devoted to his family whom he loved dearly and was so proud of.  He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Fred is survived by his wife Judith Chisholm Ierlan and his sister Sally Ierlan Young of Upland, CA. His Son, Ronald and wife Debbi Ierlan of Renton, Wa., Daughters, Wendy Ierlan of Greenfield, NH and Tanya Ierlan Morris and Husband Zachary Morris of Dublin, NH along with five Grandchildren, and five Great-Grandchildren, Grand-puppy “Jenna” and his beloved Mini-Horse Raven.
