Peterborough, NH Frederick Joseph Nielson born March 13, 1939 to Edwin Nielson and Marianne (Ruff) Nielson died on April 16, 2015. Fred, an Air Force Veteran, member of the American Legion, and the NJ Fire Chief's Association was a respected member of the Old Tappan, New Jersey Volunteer Fire Department and was also a former Chief. His number "65" was retired in 2004. He was also a member of the Old Tappan Volunteer Ambulance Corps in Old Tappan, NJ. He served on the Consistory of the Trinity Reformed Church in Old Tappan, NJ for many years as a deacon and an elder. He moved to New Hampshire where he made his home in Peterborough with his wife and their rescued hound, Henry. He was a member of the Union Congregational Church, UCC, from 2004 - 2015. He served a term as treasurer there. He was an agent for Jewelers Block Insurance in New York City where he also acted as office manager for several firms in the area. Fred is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Virginia, and their loving children; Catherine Feuerstack and her husband Patrick, Marianna Schreiber and her husband Michael, Christopher Nielson and his wife Meredith; and his two grandchildren Trevor Nielson and Amelia Nielson. He is also survived by his step brother, John Schlomann of Saddle Brook, NJ and his step sister, Patricia Manspeaker of Hagerstown, MD. Fred is predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Marianne Nielson. Visiting hours will be on Friday, May 8, 2015 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at Jellison Funeral Home, 25 Concord Street, Peterborough. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 11:00AM at the Union Congregational Church, 33 Concord Street, Peterborough, NH. Although retired, Fred was active until he became ill with Parkinson's disease.
