Peterborough, New Hampshire - George Jarvis Coffin, Jr., 86, died on July 10, 2016, at RiverMead. Mr. Coffin was born in New York City on June 4, 1930, the son of Louisa (formerly Raven) and Dr. G. Jarvis Coffin. He was educated at the Choate School in Wallingford, CT and graduated from Hobart College, Geneva, NY in 1953. He served with the United States Marine Corps in Korea as a 1st Lieutenant. After a career in the paper industry he and his wife Barbara (Bobbie) moved to Hancock, New Hampshire, from Cazenovia, New York upon his retirement in 1997 from the Fournier Group. They moved to RiverMead in 2013. Mr. Coffin was active in the American Legion and a past member of the vestry of All Saints Church in Peterborough. He served for several years as a member of the Monadnock Hospital Community Board. In Hancock he was past president of the Historical Society and the Republican Club. He also served on Hancock's Commons Commission and as a cemetery trustee. Mr. Coffin was a lover of the outdoors in all seasons, in whose backyard was always a vegetable garden and who was perhaps happiest in an open field, or beside a running stream in the woods. He is survived by his wife Barbara Coffin (formerly Jerauld), with whom he would have celebrated 60 years of marriage on August 18th; three sons, Jarvis III (Marcia) of Hancock, New Hampshire; Peter (Abby) of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts and Hancock; and Timothy (Amy) of Topsfield, Massachusetts, and Francestown, New Hampshire; his sister, Louisa Coffin Witte of Falmouth, Maine; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Coffin was predeceased by his sister Nancy Coffin Wyeth. His funeral will be held at 2 o'clock on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at All Saints Church, 51 Concord Street, Peterborough; Reverend Jamie Hamilton will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Hancock Historical Society, 7 Main Street, Hancock, NH 03449.
