Harvey Goodwin

Harvey S. Goodwin, an active member of the Monadnock community, died of pancreatic cancer at home with his family by his side on Friday, January 3, 2014. He was 64 years old. Harvey was a Peterborough native born on April 21, 1949, the youngest of ten children to Annette F. (Paine) and Harvey H. Goodwin.

Harvey attended local schools and graduated from Peterborough High School, Class of 1967. He went on to further his education at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, graduating in 1972 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He then began a 37 year career with the New Hampshire Department of Transportation retiring in 2009. Harvey started working as a construction engineer in 1972 to 1984, and then moved on to the Bureau of Bridge Maintenance serving as Administrator from 1984 to 1997. In 1997, Harvey was named Administrator for the Bureau of Turnpikes and assumed the responsibilities for overseeing the maintenance and toll operations on the New Hampshire Turnpike System. He continued in that capacity until his retirement. He was instrumental in bringing electronic tolling (E-ZPass) to the state of New Hampshire.

Harvey and Barbara (Carli) celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in September. Harvey, loving New Hampshire, brought his city bride first to Antrim and then moved to Bennington where they raised their three children, Elizabeth, Harv Jr. and Patricia. He was an involved member of his community for many years serving on the Budget Committee and the Capital Reserve Funding Committee for the Town of Bennington from 1996 to present. While living in Antrim, Harvey was a member of the Zoning Board of Adjustment and was Vice-Chair of the Antrim Planning Board from 1981 to 1988.

Harvey was the beloved husband of Barbara and the loving father of Elizabeth Castiglia and her husband Scott of Reading, MA, Harvey Goodwin, Jr. and his wife Bethany of Norton, MA, and Patricia Shrader and her husband Peter of Somerville, MA. He is survived by his sisters Joann Duarte of Taunton, MA and Grace Barker of Greenfield. He will also be dearly missed by his grandchildren Nicholas and William Castiglia and Elaine Goodwin.

He was predeceased by his siblings Richard Goodwin, Roy Goodwin, Dorothy Kastrinos, Kathleen Wheeler, Philip Martus, Phyllis Powers, and Geradine Wilson.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday January 9th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Jellison Funeral Home, 25 Concord Street, Peterborough, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter's Divine Mercy Parish, 18 Vine Street, Peterborough, NH will be held Friday, January 10th at 11:00 AM. Monsignor Gerald Belanger will officiate. Burial will take place in the spring.
