James J. Gann

d. March 30, 2016

FRANCESTOWN, NH, James Alvin J. Gann, 68 A pioneering businessman who helped bring American manufacturing know-how to mainland China in the early 1990's, James Alvin J. Gann died Wednesday, March 30, at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston. He was 68. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, May 7, at 1:00 p.m. at his beloved 1790 restored cape, better known as "The Granny Cottage," here in Francestown hosted by his life partner, Susan Downs-Cripps. A native of Boston's Roxbury neighborhood, Mr. Gann moved with his family to Lawrence when he was 10 where he was surrounded by grandparents and aunts and uncles. "Jim spoke often of summers spent with his grandfather selling fruits and vegetables at Salisbury Beach, Hampton Beach and other nearby summer resorts," Downs-Cripps said. "He also remembered fondly exploring abandoned mines along Massachusetts' North Shore with his aunt." Following graduation from Lawrence High School in 1965 and after receiving a BA from Salem State College in Salem, MA, he joined the U.S. Navy. "It was during his Navy service that Jim discovered a life-long interest in travel and the exploration of our world," Downs-Cripps said. "He toured Europe with three of his four children, a trip he always treasured. His favorite cities were Hong Kong for its excellent food and Istanbul for the excitement of the Grand Bazaar as well as its wonderful food. As one of his close friends used to say, 'Jim spoke like a true sailor.'" With China open to Western companies, Mr. Gann seized the chance to try his talents at international trade, opening a manufacturing company based in Hong Kong in the early 90s. As president of Thousand Marks LTD he spent a decade traveling the world on business and pleasure. In retirement he became known for his deep appreciation of good food and his flair for hosting spectacular dinner parties. "Jim was a gifted cook inspired by remarkable generosity and his hospitality was legend," said his friend, Lisa Bourbeau. "Jim was everyone's treasured guest as well as host. When you were at the table with Jim Gann, you could count on the conversation flowing along with the wine. His generosity was not limited to the kitchen however. He would give you the proverbial shirt off his back." Mr. Gann was also know for the warmth of his greetings: it was not uncommon to be met with "I love you," and a huge bear hug, but he met his match with friend Betty Behrsing, who's quick response was always "I love you more." No tribute to Mr. Gann's life would be complete without including mention of Jack, his handsome and gentle German Shepard, faithful companion and fellow host extraordinaire. In the last several years he developed an interest in local government and began attending regular and special meetings of the Francestown Board of Selectmen carefully recording what transpired to share with his fellow townspeople so they would all be better informed. "Jim was a true Son of Liberty, with an abiding belief in the democratic system," said his long time friend, Scott Carbee. In addition to Downs-Cripps and Jack, he leaves his four children, Christopher Gann and his wife, Sarah, of Portland, OR.; Amity Gann, and her spouse, Rebecca, of Philadelphia, PA; Timothy Gann, also of Philadelphia, and Michael Gann, of Keene, NH; five grandchildren, Ruby, Victor, Ivy Nickole, Simon Donald , and Maggie Hale; uncle to Jamile Gann, of Charlestown, MA, Simon Gann and Jordan Gann. His first wife, Gay Gann, predeceased him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gann's memory to the Francestown Fire and Rescue, 250 2nd New Hampshire Turnpike, Francestown, NH, 03043. "It does not take a majority to prevail. . . but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men." - Samuel Adams.
