James H Smith Jr., "Jim",85, of Peterborough NH passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 16th and is now at rest. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years Joanne Burrell Smith who work tirelessly to extend his life allowing him to enjoy the last year of life at home on his terms. The depth of Joanne's compassion and devotion exemplify the true meaning of love. Jim's legacy lives on through his daughters Deborah Mcduff, Karen Eckilson and his son Steve Smith and their families. Jim's children were all by his side when he passed. Jim cherished his 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Jim was born in Lancaster, MA on September 9, 1931. The son of James H Smith Sr and Isabel Johnson Smith. Jim is survived by his siblings Barbara Ivory, Patricia Thompson, Harriet Thompson, Leslie Smith and Robert P. Smith and their beautiful families. They all rallied to Jim's side to assist and support both him and Joanne. The love they expressed for their older brother was exceptional and will never be forgotten. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Jean Santos and her husband Tony and their beautiful family. They likewise extended exceptional support for both Jim and Joanne. Jim enjoyed his childhood learning how to farm and always enjoyed sports. He graduated from Clinton High School and there after enlisted in the Marine Corps. Upon fulfilling his duty he married his only true love Joanne Burrell Smith on October 2, 1954 and together they shared unending love. Jim was a talented carpenter who ran his own construction company building and remodeling homes in the Mansfield, MA area. He later enjoyed antiquing and repairing antiques. Throughout his life Jim enjoyed sports. He always enjoyed a good card game. Especially pinochle, which he would usually win. He was no stranger to a billiards table and his accurate smooth stroke would typically prevail. Jim's faith contributed to a life filled with purpose and hope. His sense of humor coupled with his genuine smile and firm hand shake were his trade mark. He was a "good" man loved by all. His expressions, wisdom and stories will forever be cherished and will endure in our hearts. A memorial service and a celebration of Jim's life will be held at a time and location to be determined.
