Janet T. Brown

June 27, 1932 — January 9, 2024

Janet Tallman Brown, 91, of Peterborough, NH passed away peacefully on January 9, 2024 after a brief illness.

Janet was born in Englewood, NJ to her parents, David and Jean (McWhinney) Tallman. She was the loving wife of almost 70 years to Randolph R. Brown of Peterborough, NH, gentle and caring mother to Jeffrey Brown and his wife, Janet of Peterborough, Beth St. Thomas and her husband, Todd of Park City, Utah, Wendy Martinoni and her husband, Joe of Wharton, NJ and Amy Porter and her husband, Andy of Whitinsville, MA.  She was a patient grandmother to four grandchildren: Alex Porter and his fiancée, Acacia Towers of Ashland, MA, Dan Martinoni of Wharton, NJ, Zach Porter of Whitinsville, MA and Emma Martinoni of Brockton, MA.

She is survived by her sister, Claire Hayden (married to Henry Hayden) of Old Bridge, NJ  and predeceased by her brother, David Tallman of Nyack, NY.

Janet grew up in Cresskill, NJ and over the course of her life, Janet worked at Demarest’s Hardware Store in Tenafly, NJ, where she met Randy, who she bravely followed to Seward, Alaska where he was dispatched by the Army for 2 years. Upon their return to New Jersey, they moved to Tenafly and then back to Cresskill, where she worked at a local newspaper, The Suburbanite, the office at the Presbyterian church at Tenafly and Kerge Realty, while raising four children and keeping a warm and welcoming home.

Janet shared her faith at the Presbyterian Church at Tenafly and the Union Congregational Church in Peterborough by becoming involved in women’s church groups throughout her life and shared her love of music by participating in vocal choirs and handbell choirs. She enjoyed lunch and bowling with her friends, Ann Preston, Jan Hrasky and Anne Thompson. She was an avid reader and dabbled in oil painting, but if you were to ask what her true passion was, it was to be outside working in her garden, listening to the birds, nurturing her plants just as she nurtured her children and grandchildren and all who knew her.

To reflect her love of family, friends and nature, a Celebration of Life will be planned for warmer temperatures when we can gather among the flowers and birds she loved so dearly.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Monadnock Kitty Rescue & Adoption at 11 Plantation Drive, Jaffrey, NH 03452 or https://kittyrescuenh.org/donate/
