Joan S. Huntington died peacefully on January 31, 2021 at Rivermead Retirement Community in Peterborough New Hampshire at the age of 95. She was born in Bridgeport, CT on March 15, 1925 and was the daughter of Douglas Craig Stewart and Josephine Haley Stewart.
Joan married her loving husband, David S. Huntington, on September 6, 1945 and resided in Fairfield, CT until 2020. They both graduated from Roger Ludlow High School in 1943. Joan and David were active members of the Southport Congregational Church for sixty years. She served on the Building and Grounds Committee, Council-at-Large, Nominating Committee, as well as many fundraising events such an Antique show, co-chaired with her husband, the Quilt show, and Rooms With A View. She volunteered her time at the church’s thrift shop, The Carousel, and was the oldest active worker. Joan was also on the Board of Directors of the Fairfield Museum, serving as chairman of the Collections Committee, and volunteering at the Ogden House. They were both honored as Grand Marshalls of the Parade and Blessing of the Fleet in Southport in June of 2016.
For 36 years Joan had an Antique’s business, collecting, buying, and selling throughout New England as well as participating in group retail shops. Together they met and worked with many good friends and were well known in the industry. In 1978 Joan and David purchased the Pixlee House originally built in Stratford Ct in 1700. They dismantled the house and restored it to its original condition in Southport CT.
Joan had a great knack for making friends and helping others who sought her guidance. She was a warm, friendly lady and always had a kind word or a bit of humor to share. She loved laughter and her family will miss her sense of humor, kindness, and generosity.
