Kerry D. Smith, 74, of Hancock, died unexpectedly on January 17, 2016 at his home after a sudden illness. He was born in Woonsocket, RI on September 6, 1941, the son of Kenneth and Wilma (Carver) Smith.
Kerry was raised in North Smithfield, RI and attended high school in Burrillville, RI. He began his vast career in computer engineering when he began working at Raytheon in Norwood, MA. While at Raytheon, he was selected to enter the training program for engineering. He eventually transferred to Sanders Corporation in Nashua and finally to Digital Equipment Corporation, where he spent the majority of his career.
Kerry moved his family to Greenfield in the early 80s and has been settled in the area since, spending over 20 years there before moving to Hancock.
In addition to being a 4H leader for many years, Kerry was known by many as "The Ox Man". He proudly owned and raised several teams of oxen. Kerry participated in reenactments in Concord, MA with the oxen and spent many years giving hayrides at the Drumlin Farm in Lincoln, MA. He also gave hayrides at the Yankee Farmer in Greenfield, and this affiliation led him to join the World Championship Punkin Chunkin team. Kerry also enjoyed racing and was part of the pit crew for a local team.
Along with his mother of North Smithfield, RI, Kerry is survived by his loving wife of more than 52 years, Gail (Good) Smith of Hancock and his daughters Jennifer Fraser and her husband Gregory of Chester, VT and Kristin Smullen and her husband Joseph of Bennington. He will also be missed by his 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, his brother Kevin Smith and his wife Nancy of Blackstone, MA and extended family.
As per Kerry's request, there will be no formal services.
