Mildred Russell

Mildred Russell, 97, of Greenfield, died at Maple Leaf Health Care Center in Manchester on January 8, 2014 after a period of failing health. Mildred was born in Lowell, MA on July 6, l916, the daughter of John Loorom and Annie (Whatmough) Loorom.

Mildred was a resident of Greenfield from the age of four, a member of the Greenfield Congregational Church and a 52 year member of the Grange.

She loved to socialize and could always be found at community suppers. She worked jigsaw and word puzzles and loved card games and car trips. She had been employed at Honeywell, NH Ball Bearing, JefCo and Brookstone.

In 2010 she received an honorary High School diploma from Milford High School. She was featured on Manchester's WMUR TV, and in an article covering the event in the Nashua Telegraph it was reported "Sharp of mind and sharp of tongue, the 93 year old firmly grasped a reporter's hand after finishing her cake. She bragged about her vitality. "It's a good thing it's not my left hand, my strong hand. I'd crush you.""

Mildred is predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Wayland Russell, her son Howard Russell and her brother James Loorom. Mildred is survived by her daughter Debra and son-in-law Ed Chambliss of Morristown, NJ. She will also be missed by her granddaughter Cheryl Russell of Middletown, NY, three great grandchildren, her great-great grandchildren, her nieces Rhonda Magazu and Rhona Stockwell of Massachusetts, Judy Pavan of Florida and nephew James Loorom of New Jersey.

A graveside service will be held in the spring.
