Oscar Somerset, Jr.

Oscar Somerset, Jr, 76, of Somersworth, NH passed away peacefully on May 15, 2024, at Pheasant Wood Center in Peterborough. He was born in Dover, NH on March 15, 1948, the son of Oscar and Barbara (Jones) Somerset.

Oscar was raised in South Berwick, ME where he attended local schools. He joined the US Navy Reservist when he was 19. While in the Reserves he was also a member of the Drum and Bugle Core in Rollinsford, where he met his wife of 55 years, Norma. In the early years of their marriage Oscar decided to transition from reservist to active duty in the US Navy. While in the Navy, he served as a marine mechanic on the USS Tusk out of Groton, CT and later on the USS Simon Lake, where he and his family were stationed in Rota, Spain. Upon leaving the US Navy, he moved his family back to South Berwick and began working at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a Safety Specialist, where he worked until retirement.

During his retirement he took to photography, opening 8th Wonder Photography and enjoyed going to various craft shows to sell his work. He loved having all the time for his grandchildren and attending the various extracurricular activities that they were involved in, even if it meant traveling to neighboring states. He and his wife had spent some time traveling the country visiting family in California taking many stops along the way to see the various sites.

In addition to his wife, Norma (Winship) Somerset, Oscar is survived by daughter Debbie and husband Marc Blais, son Bill and wife Crystal, daughter-in-law Maurita, sister Mary and husband Pete Gould Sr., 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, with one on the way, and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by parents, son Eric, grandson Jonathan, and sisters Donna Gagne and Bonnie Schoff.

Services will be private for the family.
