Samuel Charles Zachos

Samuel Charles Zachos, 91 of Bennington, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2024.  For the past two years he happily resided at Scott-Farrar in Peterborough.

The son of Kostas and Agoritsa (Timbas) Zachos, Sam was born on May 28, 1932 on Acre Street in Bennington, NH.  He attended Pierce School and graduated in 1950 from Hillsborough High School.  He joined the National Guard in Hillsborough in 1949. At that time, it was the Tank Company 195 Infantry Regiment and later the 421 Howitzer Battalion, and then the 172nd Howitzer Battalion.  He was called to active duty in 1961 during the Berlin Crisis.  In 1968 he transferred to the 744th Transportation Company before his honorable discharge with 20 years of service in 1970. In 1974 he joined the National Guard in Peterborough that was the 210th Engineer Det.  He served another 18 ½ years, retiring at the age of 60 as the Food Service Sergeant with a total of 38 ½ years of service.

Sam married the love of his life, Linnea Farhm, on May 15, 1955. Sam and Linny raised 4 children. In 1969 they purchased the “Lake View” cottage on Gregg Lake in Antrim, NH where they shared fond memories throughout their lifetime with family and friends, most memorable were the July 4th celebrations.  He enjoyed camping with his children and grandchildren at Bayley’s Camping Resort in Scarborough, ME.   Their love of country music was known by all, with numerous trips by bus to Wheeling, WV with their closest friends.  They attended their first Fan Fair in Nashville, TN in 1974 which led to annual trips later in life.   During retirement, Linny and Sam enjoyed their annual trips to the Hale Koa Resort on Waikiki Beach.

Sam worked at the Monadnock Paper Mill for 52 years as a shipping controller. He was a member of The United Papermaker and Sulphite Workers and held the office of Union President for 14 years.

In the seventies, he was installed as a bank director with Valley Bank in Hillsborough, which eventually became TD Bank. Sam was a 33-year member of the Forty and Eight Voiture Local 183; a 43-year member of the Elks Club. For more than 40 years, Sam was proud to be a member of the American Legion Post 11 in Jaffrey where he went through all of the chairs and became Commander. Until his passing, he held the office of Finance Officer.

Sam volunteered over 2000 hours at Monadnock Community Hospital where he met many friends and was a beloved member of the hospital community.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Linnea (Farhm) Zachos in 2019; his beloved daughter, Dorinda “Dee Dee” Zachos in 2018; and his two brothers John and Peter Zachos.

He is survived by his son, Stephen Zachos of Hillsboro, two daughters, Sandra Rebstad of Warren, and Catherine and her husband Anthony Burke of Saco, Maine.  He also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Elisha, Nicholas, Jasmine, Amanda, Kristen, Daniel, Nichole, and Travis, thirteen great-grandchildren, four nieces, and four nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Friday January 12, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Jellison Funeral Home, 25 Concord Street, Peterborough, NH.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday January 13, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the Bennington Congregational Church, Francestown Road, Bennington, NH with The Very Rev. Dr. Constantine Newman as Celebrant. Immediately following the services, there will be a Celebration of life at the American Legion Post 11, featuring “Sam’s famous salad and bowl”.

Burial, with military honors, will be held on May 25, 2024, at 11:00am at Evergreen Cemetery, Bennington.
