Veteran Burial Flags

A United States flag is available at no cost to drape the casket or accompany the urn of any deceased veteran who served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces. This gesture honors the veteran's military service to the nation. The VA provides a burial flag for:

  • Veterans who served during wartime
  • Veterans who died on active duty after May 27, 1941
  • Veterans who served after January 31, 1955
  • Peacetime veterans discharged before June 27, 1950
  • Certain individuals who served in the organized military forces of the Commonwealth of the Philippines while in service to the U.S. Armed Forces and who passed away on or after April 25, 1951
  • Certain former members of the Selected Reserves

Eligibility for Receiving the Burial Flag

Typically, the flag is given to the next of kin as a keepsake after the funeral service. If there is no next of kin, the flag may be provided to a friend who requests it. At VA national cemeteries with an Avenue of Flags, families may choose to donate their loved ones' burial flags to be displayed on patriotic holidays.

How to Apply

To request the flag, complete VA Form 27-2008, Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes. Flags can be obtained from any VA regional office or U.S. Post Office, and funeral directors often assist with the process.

Can a Burial Flag Be Replaced?

The law permits one flag per veteran’s funeral, and it cannot be replaced if lost, damaged, or stolen. However, some veterans' organizations or community groups may assist in obtaining a replacement.

Displaying the Burial Flag

The method for displaying the flag depends on whether the casket is open or closed. VA Form 27-2008 includes guidelines on proper display and folding. The burial flag is not intended for outdoor display due to its size and material, as it is made of cotton and may be easily damaged by the elements.
