Veteran Headstones

Veterans' Headstones and Markers

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides, at no cost, a government-issued headstone or marker for the unmarked grave of any eligible veteran, regardless of their date of passing, in cemeteries around the world. For veterans who passed away on or after November 1, 1990, the VA also offers a headstone or marker for graves that already have a private marker. Families may choose from a traditional headstone or a design option introduced in 2009.

Available choices include flat markers made of granite, marble, or bronze, as well as upright headstones crafted from granite or marble. The selected style must be consistent with the existing memorials at the burial site. Additionally, niche markers are available for columbaria that house cremated remains.

For burials in national cemeteries, state veterans' cemeteries, or military post/base cemeteries, cemetery staff will handle the ordering process based on inscription details provided by the next of kin or an authorized representative.

Spouses and dependents are eligible for a government-provided headstone or marker only if they are interred in a national, state veterans', or military cemetery.

While the headstone or marker itself is provided at no cost, families are responsible for arranging installation in private cemeteries and covering any related setting fees.

Note: Recent updates have been made to eligibility requirements for headstones and markers.
