The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers, at no cost, a government-issued headstone or marker for the unmarked grave of any eligible veteran, regardless of when they passed away, in cemeteries worldwide. For veterans who died on or after November 1, 1990, the VA can also provide a headstone or marker for graves that already have a private marker. In such cases, applicants may choose between a traditional headstone or a new design option introduced in spring 2009.
Available options include flat markers in granite, marble, and bronze, as well as upright headstones in granite and marble. The chosen style must align with the existing monuments at the burial site. Additionally, niche markers are provided for columbaria that hold cremated remains.
If the burial takes place in a national cemetery, state veterans' cemetery, or military post/base cemetery, cemetery officials will order the headstone or marker using inscription details provided by the next of kin or authorized representative.
Please note that spouses and dependents are only eligible for a government-furnished headstone or marker if they are interred in a national, state veterans', or military cemetery.
While there is no charge for the headstone or marker, applicants are responsible for arranging placement in private cemeteries, including any associated setting fees.
Important: New regulations regarding eligibility for headstones and markers have been implemented.
